Energy Conservation Site Assessments
Best efforts without knowledge are just best efforts- W Edward Deming
Today, energy can no longer be just a thought....the management and use of energy must be viewed no different than any other ongoing managerial or site process.
Assessment Objectives
Experience has shown that a site energy assessment can typically result in a savings of at least ten percent (10%) of your normal energy spend. For many sites, this can be a significant amount of dollars. We live under the addage that "the best dollar saved, is one not spent".
Assessments are typically sought or performed in the following areas: demand control, boiler and furnace efficiencies, HVAC loads, compressed air optimization, process heat loads, heat recovery, lighting optimization, shutdown optimization, motors and motor drives, power factor correction and water/sewer efficiencies. Not to be overlooked should also be an investigation into practices as to how processes or equipment are cared for. Much of the emphasis is placed on opportunities that have the simple payback period of two years or less. However, in many cases, we can explore areas where the Return On Investment (ROI) may be longer but perhaps can add a significant impact to your company.

Assessment Procedure
Each of the RCMs (Resource Conservation Measures) for the different areas are discovered and developed by following the basic Six Sigma principles and practices of Measure, Analysis and taking Action. Each of the RCMs developed are presented in a form that attempts to be written as a mini-report allowing for it to stand alone as an assessment for the category listed by each RCM.
Each RCM is developed and written utilizing the following structure:
Findings: This is a listing of all the things discovered within the facility where improved efficiencies and opportunities for energy reduction may exist. This section also attempts to list points that the facility may be performing well and requires no change except where expansion or replication of these actions may benefit the facility further or other facilities within the organization. These findings will include pictures from the site and/or tables and graphs which would include site interval energy data, operation specific energy usage, weather patterns, current and previous billing statements. All of these are melded together in an attempt to paint a true picture of how the site operates from an energy usage standpoint.
Recommendations: This is an inventory/description of actionable items that may be considered for implementation. Each recommendation is given a 1-3 Priority Ranking using criteria that would describe ease of implementation and/or cost. Some recommendations that may be regarded as "inestment grade" will suggest that a particular field expert may be required.
